Students celebrated STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) Day at Dixon Educational Learning Academy on Tuesday, May 19. Detroit Lions players, Meteorologist and WDIV Local 4 Reporter Andrew Humphrey, Tata Technologies as well as guests from Ford Motor Company, Wayne State Medical School, instructors and students from Cody’s Detroit Institute of Technology, and even a few volunteer NFL moms visited Dixon to speak to the eighth graders about careers in the STEM field.
Students from Cody demonstrated their robotic cars built by students studying engineering. They also gave away prizes, t-shirts, and lab coats. Cody students are hoping that some of the Dixon eighth graders will choose to pursue a STEM related path at Cody DIT.
Also at Dixon, the STEM Youth Literacy Program recently hosted its monthly meeting where staff showcased to students the multiple aspects of STEM. Students studied farm animals and listened to presentations, read books with the volunteers about different types of farm animals, and built animals from Legos.
