In tribute to the Detroit Public School League’s fertile pipeline of outstanding talent, the DPS Office of Athletics will present the fifth annual PSL Proud Strong Learners of the Year Awards, sponsored by Detroit area McDonald’s, Wednesday from 5 p.m.- 7 p.m. at the Marcus Garvey Academy Harambee Center, 2301 Van Dyke, near Kercheval, in Detroit.

5th Annual PSLER of the Year poster 001Detroit Lions linebacker Tahir Whitehead will be the keynote speaker at the program, which will honor 54 student-athletes and three standout teams, each chosen Proud Strong Learners of the Week, representative of the PSL’s top boys’ and girls’ athletic performers as nominated by their coaches and the DPS Office of Athletics.

The weekly honorees were cited for their athletic achievements during the 2014-15 fall, winter and spring sports season. The program will culminate with one boy and one girl honoree being ceremoniously named this year’s Proud Strong Learners of the Year.

Whitehead, supported by Lady Jane’s Haircuts for Men, rewarded this year’s Proud Strong Learners of the Week with tickets to Detroit Lions, Michigan Wolverines and Detroit Tigers games as a way to promote hard work in the classroom.

“Whenever I talk to high school students, I stress to them the importance of education because I need them to understand that what they learn in the classroom will take them a lot further in life than playing sports,” said Whitehead.

“Their athletic careers are not promised and on any given day, in any given game, your career can be over. I encourage them to take full advantage of what they’re learning in the classroom.”

The honorees, parents, coaches and school supporters are invited to this media recognition event.
