Renaissance High junior Nijah Slaughter, who struck out 10 and allowed just three hits in an 8-1 victory against Cass Tech that captured the Lady Phoenix’s 11th consecutive Detroit Public School League girls’ softball championship, has been named PSL Proud Strong Learner of the Week.
Slaughter has posted an impressive 11-3 overall record with a 1.14 earned run average and 66 strikeouts to lead Renaissance’s pitching rotation this season. A third-year varsity player, she made all-tournament teams twice this season and showed her versatility by playing shortstop and nearly every other position.
“She’s gotten better and better each year,’’ Renaissance coach Garrard Taylor said. “She’s a power pitcher and she’s really worked at it. She’s a hard worker and takes a lot of pride in what she does.
“She’s just a great athlete. She really can play any position on the field, from catcher to the outfield. It’s rare that you get a player who can do that. But she wants to be the best and you can tell that by her grades. She works just as hard in the classroom as she does on the field.”
Slaughter is the only captain returning from this year’s four team co-captains and boasts a 3.97 grade point average.
