Western International still king in PSL baseball; Ford wins East-West championship

Western International High captured its eighth consecutive Detroit Public School League boys’ baseball championship Monday with a 4-0 victory against King in the PSL Mega Division title game at Wayne State University.

Western International Cowboys — 2015 PSL Mega Division boys’ baseball champions

Coach Juan Sanchez’s Cowboys finished with an unbeaten 12-0 league record as senior Amadeo Apollini pitched a two-hit, complete-game shutout to lead the championship clincher.

King, despite a strong pitching effort from sophomore Johnathan Darby, hurt its cause with crucial errors down the stretch. Coach Norm Taylor’s Crusaders finished with an 8-4 league record.

Henry Ford Trojans — 2015 PSL East-West Division boys’ baseball champions

Henry Ford opened the action with a 20-4 romp past East English Village to win the PSL East-West title game. Fueled by a 14-run second inning, Coach Curtis Rogers’ Trojans (10-2) didn’t need to go any further to beat the two-time defending champion Bulldogs (10-2).

Between games, the PSL All-City girls’ softball team and the PSL All-City boys’ baseball team, as selected by league coaches, were introduced during an on-field ceremony. The team includes players from each competing team and the number of selections for each school is based on where each team finished in the regular season division standings, first place (3), second place (2), third and below (1).
