The Detroit Public Schools Department of JROTC hosted its 66th Annual Military Ball on Friday, May 1 at the Burton Manor banquet facility. Historically, the Military Ball is a time when all members of the military unit set aside their normal military duties to socialize and network with each other. JROTC cadets are given a brief glimpse of this ageless Military tradition, an event that is looked forward to with much anticipation.
One very important event that takes place at the Ball is the Change of Command ceremony. The out-going Cadet Corps Commander Cadet Colonel Destane’ Turner relinquished her position as the Corps Commander, to allow the acceptance of the Command by the In-Coming Commander, Cadet Colonel Lawrence Shepherd.
Cadets who were recognized at the Ball included:
- Cadet Sheritha Rayford, King High School, Choice Award (for excellence in Journalism)
- Cadet Michelle Browning, Renaissance High School, $500 scholarship (for participation and excellence in the JROTC STEM program)
- Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Timberlee Whiteus, Renaissance High School, Cadet of the Year
All 18 DPS JROTC programs were represented. The evening concluded with a delicious meal and dancing. It was truly an enjoyable night to remember.
