Western International High School’s Class A state champion basketball team was presented with Spirit of Detroit Awards from City Council president Brenda Jones at the council’s regularly scheduled session Tuesday at the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center.

Cowboys’ head coach Derrick McDowell and his players and staff each received a certificate in recognition of them completing a perfect 26-0 season and winning the first state championship in school history.

“We have eight seniors who are graduating and all eight are preparing to go to college, six on full-ride athletic scholarships and two on academic scholarships,” McDowell said. “That’s what I’m most proud about with this team.”
