PSL to crown girls’ softball champions Friday at U-D Mercy, boys’ baseball champions Monday at Wayne State

The Detroit Public School League will close this school week and begin next week by crowning the 2015 PSL girls’ softball and boys’ baseball champions.

Friday’s (May 15) girls’ softball doubleheader at University of Detroit Mercy starts with the PSL Division II title game between defending champion Central (5-2) and Cody (7-0) at 12:30 p.m. That game will be followed by the PSL Division I title game at 3 p.m., featuring 10-time defending league champion Renaissance (8-0) against Cass Tech (7-1). Admission is $5.

On Monday (May 18), the PSL boys’ baseball championship doubleheader will be held for the first time at Wayne State University. The Mega Division championship game is at 4:30 p.m. and will be preceded by the East-West Division title game at 2 p.m. Admission is $5 and gates open at 1 p.m. There is limited bleacher seating behind home plate, so bring your lawn chairs and sit along the outfield baselines. Parking for the event is free in WSU lot 50 off Warren and the Lodge Freeway service drive.

Western, the seven-time defending league champions, heads the field of teams competing in Thursday’s (May 14) boys’ baseball league semifinals. In the Mega Division, Western (10-0) hosts Cass Tech (4-6) at Clark Park and Renaissance (7-3) plays King (7-3) at DCP-Northwestern. In the East-West Division semis, defending champion East English Village (9-1) hosts Central (4-6) and Ford (8-2) hosts Osborn (9-1). All games are scheduled to start at 4 p.m. and admission to the semifinals is free.

In girls’ softball semifinal action Monday (May 11) at Maheras-Gentry Park, Renaissance shut out East English Village 15-0, Cass Tech advanced past Western 11-3, Cody defeated Pershing 22-1 and Central beat Osborn 20-3.
