DPS Emergency Manager Darnell Earley to Receive Muskegon Community College Distinguished Alumni Award

Detroit Public Schools Emergency Manager Darnell Earley has been named the 2015 Muskegon Community College Distinguished Alumnus.

A native of Muskegon Heights, Michigan, and a 1975 graduate of Muskegon Community College (MCC), Earley will be honored on Tuesday, May 5 at the Alumni Award Dinner on campus, and on Wednesday, May 6, he will give the commencement address to the MCC Class of 2015 at Walker Arena.

The theme of Earley’s commencement address is: “Start, Stay, Succeed.”

“Some of us, when we graduate high school, aren’t sure of what our next steps will be,” said Earley. “For me, it was critical to get started doing something constructive and Muskegon Community College served as a waypoint for me to map out my future. It was a lot like a continuation of high school, but with a different level of competitive responsibility. My experience at MCC positioned me to succeed in reaching my career goal of becoming a public servant.”

Established in 1998, the Distinguished Alumni Award is the highest honor that MCC bestows upon outstanding alumni whose professional achievements, community service and advocacy of higher education exemplify the foremost ideals of their alma mater.

His extensive career in public administration over the last 35-plus years included many high profile professional positions, such as the Emergency Manager of the City of Flint, City Manager of the cities Flint and Saginaw, deputy controller for administrative services and budget in Ingham County, and Director of Community Development for the Urban League of Muskegon. He also served as president of the International City/County Management Association from 2009-2010.

In addition to numerous honors and recognitions received throughout his career, Earley was honored in 2011 with an Outstanding Achievement Award from the Western Michigan University School of Public Affairs and Administration, where he earned his Master of Public Administration degree in 1981.

Earley is a resident of Lansing, MI, where he lives with his wife, Bobbie.
