East English Village senior pitcher Melvin Coleman named PSL Proud Strong Learner of the Week

Melvin Coleman, whose impact on the mound and at the plate has East English Village standing on top of the Detroit Public School League boys’ baseball East Division with a 4-0 record, is the PSL Proud Strong Learner of the Week.

Coleman enters Friday’s (May 1) game against Henry Ford with a 3-0 record as a pitcher, having struck out 26 in 16 innings. He’s also the Bulldogs’ leading hitter with a .632 average, including two doubles, two triples, eight runs scored and 11 runs batted in.

PSL baseball EEVDCP 184In a 10-6 victory against division rival Osborn, the senior had two triples and four RBI while striking out seven in six innings.

“He’s like having another coach on the field,’’ East English Village coach Ken Hall said.
“He’s always helping his teammates. If he sees something wrong in practice, he shows leadership in a positive way. He can play anywhere on the field and he really understands the game.”

The Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learner of the Week award is representative of the league’s top boys’ and girls’ athletes. The award is presented by the DPS Office of Athletics and is sponsored by Detroit-area McDonald’s owner-operators
