Cass Tech sophomore Mariam Sheriff was a leader of her team’s winning performance in the Courageous track and field invitational meet Saturday (April 25) at Mumford High School and has been named Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learner of the Week.

PSL baseball EEVDCP 223Coach Chris Wright’s Lady Technicians piled up 166½ points, 50 more than the next team, to take the girls’ team title. Sheriff emerged a triple winner with victories in the 100 meter hurdles (17.32) and the 200 meter dash (26.81). She also anchored the Lady Technicians’ winning 4×200 relay team (1:46.68).

“Mariam is a very hard worker and always encourages her teammates,” Wright said of Sheriff, who also shines in the classroom with a 3.,8 grade point average.

“Even though she’s young, she has good leadership qualities. She definitely has a chance to be the favorite in the hurdles in the PSL championship meet (Saturday, May 23 at Renaissance High School).”

The Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learner of the Week award is representative of the league’s top boys’ and girls’ athletes. The award is presented by the DPS Office of Athletics and is sponsored by Detroit-area McDonald’s owner-operators
