Western International High junior Aaron Betancourt, who drove in the winning run and made a pair of stellar defensive plays in the Cowboys’ 4-3 victory against Renaissance, has been named Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learner of the Week.

PSL baseball Western 4, Renaissance 3 474 (3)Betancourt’s walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning enabled the seven-time defending PSL champions to win the battle for first place in the league’s Mega Division.

“He’s our anchor at shortstop,” Western coach Juan Sanchez said. “We rely on him heavily to play solid defense and to help us on the mound.”

In addition to his big hit and strong defense against Renaissance, Betancourt had a save and a victory in two relief pitching appearances in Western’s nonleague doubleheader sweep against Madison Heights.

The Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learner of the Week award is representative of the league’s top boys’ and girls’ athletes. The award is presented by the DPS Office of Athletics and is sponsored by Detroit-area McDonald’s owner-operators
