Class A Basketball State Champ Western International High School hosts Celebration Pep Rally

To celebrate the school’s recent victory as the newly-crowned Michigan High School Athletic Association Class A state champions, Western International High School’s boys’ basketball team student athletes and coaches were honored during a special all-school pep assembly on Thursday, April 2, 2015.

With a 62-59 final victory Saturday, March 28 against Saginaw Arthur Hill, Western Basketball Coach Derrick McDowell’s team completed a perfect 26-0 season and earned the first state championship in Western’s history.

District leaders including Emergency Manager Darnell Earley; Alvin Wood, Assistant Superintendent of Academics; Rodolfo Diaz, Principal of Western International High School; Alvin L. Ward, Sr., Executive Director, DPS Office of Athletics; Derrick McDowell, Coach, Western Boys Basketball Team; Keith Johnson, former Detroit Federation of Teachers President and Western alum; all students/staff of Western International High School; and Southwest Detroit schools’ principals and students attended the event to congratulate the team.

Athletes and coaches from the team also spoke during the event and showcased highlight videos from the season in the Western International High School Auditorium.
