King girls one victory from Final Four berth; three PSL boys team vying for MHSAA regional titles

King High’s girls basketball team (23-1) plays Romulus (18-5) in the Class A girls’ basketball quarterfinal tonight (Tuesday, March 17) at 7 p.m. at Dearborn Fordson High School, with the winner earning a berth in Friday’s (March 20) semifinals at Michigan State University’s Breslin Center.

Coach William Winfield’s Lady Crusaders are the four-time defending Detroit Public School League champions.

The PSL is also making its mark in the MHSAA boys’ tournament with three teams still alive after Monday’s regional openers.

In Class A, No. 1-ranked Western (22-0) won 65-55 against league foe East English Village (18-5) to advance into Wednesday’s 7 p.m. regional championship game at Sterling Heights High School. Coach Derrick McDowell’s Cowboys will play Warren De La Salle (14-9), a 58-50 winner against Clinton Twp. Chippewa Valley.

In Class B, Ford beat DCP-Northwestern (9-10) 78-56 in all-PSL regional opener at Dearborn Heights Robichaud High School. Coach Ken Flowers’ Trojans (17-5) play Detroit Consortium (17-5) at 7 p.m. Wednesday for the regional championship. Consortium defeated River Rouge 67-60.

In the Class B regional at Yale High School, the PSL’s Osborn Knights, coached by Lonell Williams, advanced to the finals with a 62-55 victory against Pontiac Notre Dame Prep. Osborn (14-8) plays New Haven (24-0) Wednesday at 7 p.m. New Haven defeated Yale 61-39.
