Sampson Academy wins Salmon in the Classroom grant

Fourth-grade teacher Ellen Hoyer and her “28 ambitious, excited science students,” as she affectionately describes them, are the recipients of a $1,500 grant titled, “Salmon in the Classroom” from the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The $1,500 gift will be donated by the Metro-West Steelheaders to provide 200 salmon fry in October 2016 to raise the fish for seven months as part of an educational science program.

Hoyer’s fourth-grade class is annually involved with the Great Lakes Educational Program, where the director Steve Stewart has welcomed the students to deposit the salmonines into the Detroit River for their final journey home.

“We are thrilled for this new adventure and look forward to raising our fry!” exclaimed Hoyer.
