DPS Elementary-Middle School Athletics Program to host Golf Registration, 2nd Annual Boys Basketball Gymboree & Baseball Coaches Clinic

Aligning with its mission to build healthy bodies and minds for the district’s youngest learners, the Detroit Public Schools Elementary-Middle School Athletics Program will host a series of events on Saturday, March 7 and Sunday, March 8 to kick off the Spring 2015 K-8 Sports Season.

2nd Annual Boys Basketball Gymboree
The Elementary-Middle School Athletics Program will hosts its 2nd Annual Boys Basketball Gymboree on Saturday, March 7 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at Renaissance High School, 6565 W. Outer Drive. Basketball teams from Bates Academy, Blackwell Institute, Bunche Preparatory Academy, Durfee Elementary-Middle School, Emerson Elementary-Middle School, Henderson Academy, Hutchinson Elementary-Middle School at Howe, Paul Robeson-Malcolm X Academy, Pulaski Elementary-Middle School, Spain Elementary-Middle School and Thirkell Elementary-Middle School will compete in a series of back-to-back games during the Gymboree for a chance to take home the Elementary-Middle School Championship Title.

K-8 Golf Program
Also on Saturday, March 7, from 12:30-2:30 p.m. at Renaissance High School, registration will open for the K-8 Golf Program, hosted by the Hollywood Golf Institute. Parents who would like for their children to learn the game of golf are encouraged to attend. Hollywood Golf Institute will provide students with a comprehensive program encompassing the structure of the game as well as a focus on the golf industry. The Golf Program also aims to enhance participating students’ aptitude and integrate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) competencies in proper golf mechanics.

Baseball Coaches Clinic
New this year, a Baseball Coaches Clinic will be held on Sunday, March 8 from 2-5 p.m. at Western International High School, 1500 Scotten St. More coaches are needed at the K-8 level. The clinic is open to all individuals interested in coaching Elementary-Middle School Baseball. The clinic is mandatory for all current Elementary-Middle School Baseball Coaches.

All Elementary-Middle School Athletic Programs for the Spring 2015 season will include the following sports and grade levels:
• K-8 Golf
• K-5 Track
• K-5 Soccer
• K-2 Basketball
• 3-8 Flag Football
• 5-6 Baseball
• 7-8 Baseball
• 6-8 Track

Schools are encouraged to register for Elementary-Middle School Athletic Programs by Monday, March 9 to determine which youth athletic offerings will be provided at each school. Parents will then be able to register their students for each individual sport at the school level.
