King High’s Leah Mathis, who came off the bench to score 12 points and grab 12 rebounds in the Lady Crusaders’ 66-53 victory against Cass Tech in the Detroit Public School League girls’ basketball championship game, has been named PSL Proud Strong Learner of the Week.

DSC_0340 (3)Mathis, a 6-3 senior forward, didn’t start as punishment for missing a practice but unleashed her wrath to help the Lady Crusaders win their fourth consecutive PSL girls’ baskeball crown Feb. 20 at University of Detroit Mercy Calihan Hall.

“She’s a tremendous rebounder and shot-blocker and she runs the floor well,” King coach William Winfield said. “She also shoots free throws well and is one of the vocal leaders on the floor. When she sees something wrong, she tries to correct it.”

Mathis is averaging a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds for the season, Winfield said.

The Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learner of the Week award is representative of the league’s top boys’ and girls’ athletes. The award is presented by the DPS Office of Athletics and is sponsored by Detroit-area McDonald’s owner-operators
