Brailen Neely, who finished with a team-high 14 points and came up with a key steal to help preserve Western’s 46-45 victory against Renaissance in the Detroit Public School League boys’ basketball championship game, has been named PSL Proud Strong Learner of the Week.

DSC_0922 (2)Neely, a 6-foot junior guard, “has been a real leader all year and he’s gotten a lot better defensively,’’ said Cowboys’ coach Derrick McDowell.

League coaches recognized Neely’s worth by making him the top vote-getter on the 2014-15 PSL All-City team.  Western’s title-clinching victory Feb. 20 earned the school’s first PSL boys’ basketball championship since 1922.

The Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learner of the Week award is representative of the league’s top boys’ and girls’ athletes. The award is presented by the DPS Office of Athletics and is sponsored by Detroit-area McDonald’s owner-operators
