Cass Tech rules the pool to defend PSL boys’ swimming title

Cass Tech won gold medals in seven of the 11 events and scored 159 points to repeat as Detroit Public School League boys’ swimming champions Thursday at King High School.

First-year coach Javon Waters, Sr. saw his Technicians get first-place finishes from junior Eduardo Gutierrez in the 200 freestyle (2:07.92), junior James Rassoull II in the 50 freestyle (24.51), sophomore Kenneth Hammond, Jr. in the 100 butterfly (1:06.20) and senior Angel Del La Torre in the 100 backstroke (1:08.23).

PSL boys swim meet 2015 112Cass Tech also won all three relay events, with its quartets timing 1:57 in the 200 medley, 1:44.24 in the 200 freestyle and 4:01.40 in the 400 freestyle.

Western, led by sophomore 100 freestyle gold medalist Julio Garcia (56.69), took second place with 142 points. King placed a distant third with 59 points followed by Renaissance fourth with 49 and East English Village fifth with 18. Mumford didn’t score.

King freshman Delshawn Durkins was the meet’s only individual double gold medalist, winning the 200 individual medley (2:22.18) and the 500 freestyle (5:54.97). Renaissance junior Markis McCoy won the 100 breaststroke (1:13.39).
