Renaissance guard Darryl Smith named PSL Proud Strong Learner of the Week

Renaissance High’s Darryl Smith, who scored 16 points in the Phoenix’s 70-55 victory Wednesday against Detroit Public School League boys’ basketball defending champion Pershing, has been named PSL Proud Strong Learner of the Week.

The 5-8 senior guard also passed the test literally by earning a remarkable score of 25 on the ACT.

DSC_1395“Darryl had an outstanding week,’’ Phoenix coach Venias Jordan Jr. said of Smith, who transferred to Renaissance from outside the district and just recently became eligible.

“He’s a natural leader and everything we were missing. We’ve won every game that he’s played.”

Prior to the Pershing game, Smith scored 16 points with four assists in a 70-55 victory against Cass Tech.

The Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learner of the Week award is representative of the league’s top boys’ and girls’ athletes. The award is presented by the DPS Office of Athletics and is sponsored by Detroit-area McDonald’s owner-operators
