Countdown to Calihan heating up for PSL basketball contenders

The Detroit Public School League 2015 Big D boys’ basketball tournament began Thursday with two play-in games as Davis Aerospace fell at the hands of Denby 62-48 and West Side lost to Central 48-33.

The boys’ tourney resumes today, (Friday, Feb. 6) with first-round games at eight sites, all 4 p.m. starts (league records in parenthesis): King (3-6) at Renaissance (5-4), Southeastern (1-8) at CMA (8-1), Cody (0-9) at Osborn (7-2), Mumford (4-5) at Pershing (6-3), Ford (5-4) at Douglass (6-3), Central (3-6) at East English Village (8-1), Cass Tech 4-5) at DCP-Northwestern (5-4) and Denby (5-4) at No. 1 state-ranked Western (9-0). The winners advance to the quarterfinal round, Tuesday and Wednesday Feb. 10-11 at Renaissance High School.

In the PSL Big D girls’ quarterfinals Wednesday at Western International High, Mumford beat Denby 52-11, and Cass Tech defeated Pershing 58-31. In Thursday’s girls’ quarterfinal games, DCP-Northwestern bowed out 71-30 against Renaissance and Ford was ousted by three-time defending league champion King 58-11.

The girls’ Big D tourney continues with the semifinals Monday, Feb. 9 at Western International High. Cass Tech (10-1) plays Mumford (9-2) at 5 p.m. followed by Renaissance (8-3) against King (10-0) at 7 p.m. The winners advance to the PSL girls and boys championship doubleheader Friday, Feb. 20 at University of Detroit Mercy Calihan Hall.
