PSL’s Big D girls’ basketball tournament begins Wednesday

The Detroit Public School League Big D girls’ basketball tournament begins Wednesday with first-round games at six sites.

Top-seeded King is the three-time defending PSL champion and, with a 9-0 league record, is again the team leading the way. Coach William Winfield’s Lady Crusaders and Denby (5-4) are the only teams with a first-round bye.

All other girls’ teams (league records in parenthesis) are in action Wednesday at 4 p.m. The schedule includes Southeastern (0-9) at DCP-Northwestern (9-0); Davis (1-8) at Renaissance (6-3); DIA (4-5) at Ford (5-4); Cody (3-6) at Mumford (7-2); Pershing (4-5) at CMA (8-1) and Osborn (3-6) at Cass Tech (8-1).

The winners advance to the quarterfinals Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 4 and Feb. 5 at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Western High School.

The semifinals are set for Monday, Feb. 9, at 5 and 7 p.m. at Western High School, culminating with the PSL girls’ championship game at 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20, at University of Detroit Mercy Calihan Hall.

The boys’ Big D tournament starts Friday, Feb. 6 and concludes with the PSL championship game Feb. 20 at U-D Mercy at 7:30 p.m. The Big D girls’ bracket:
