Cass Tech High’s football team was named the Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learners of the Week, culminating another outstanding season in which the Technicians reached the MHSAA Division 1 state semifinals for the fifth consecutive year.
Despite falling short of its goal of winning a third state championship within a four-year span, Coach Thomas Wilcher’s team posted a perfect 9-0 regular season record and finished 12-1 overall for the second year in a row.
“We had a great season, led by a sophomore quarterback (Rodney Hall) who was a first-year starter,’’ Wilcher said. “He did a great job controlling the offense and complemented (senior All-American running back) Mike Weber to make our team a powerhouse.”
Cass Tech will graduate 20 seniors, but Weber, one of the nation’s most coveted college recruits, is the only skilled position player not returning.
“The others were ninth and 10th graders,” Wilcher said. “We’ll have 14 returning starters next year, eight on offense and six on defense.”
Cass Tech won its second consecutive PSL championship, but lost in the state semifinals 30-15 to Saline after a controversial ruling by the officials reversed a potentially game-tying touchdown and took six points off the scoreboard, leaving the team deflated.
Wilcher, whose team won back to back state championships in 2011-12, said he has gotten over the disappointment of a second straight semifinal defeat and is looking toward the future.
“We’re ready to start over again,’’ he said. “What we’ve shown is that Cass Tech is not a bunch of individuals but we’re a solid team. Every guy plays for the man next to him. Our expectations in the program are high, and we’re doing everything we can to keep that level of competition going at Cass Tech.”
The Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learner of the Week award is representative of the league’s top boys’ and girls’ athletes. The award is presented by the DPS Office of Athletics and is sponsored by Detroit-area McDonald’s owner-operators.
