East English Village senior quarterback Anton Curtis accounted for five touchdowns to lead the Bulldogs’ 40-21 MHSAA Division 2 district semifinal victory Saturday against Port Huron and has been named the Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learner of the Week.

“He played like a senior quarterback should,’’ the Ville coach Rod Oden said of the 6-2, 175-pound three-year starter.

“He made good decisions with the football all game long. His senior leadership was evident on the field.”

DSC_0460Curtis completed 17-of-28 passes for 215 yards and three touchdowns against Port Huron and added 36 yards and two TDs on the ground, helping the Bulldogs amass 563 yards in total offense to dominate the game.

“He’s been consistent throughout the year but, because we have other skilled players, we hadn’t called on him to win a game,” Oden said.

“Last week, we chose to let him loose and he showed what he can do. The cat is out the bag and he’s going to have to be consistent with his playmaking ability for us to keep advancing in the state playoffs.”

Curtis, the defending PSL 400 meter track champion, is verbally committed to play collegiately at Western Michigan University. The Broncos see him as a receiver. As a high school quarterback, Curtis poses a bona fide dual threat, his strong arm complementing his explosive speed. His biggest asset might be experience.

“He’s not new to this,” Oden said.  “He’s started 35 consecutive games for us and this is his third district finals. He’s a veteran who understands that the separation is in the preparation.

“He wins games for us through the week now. He understands the importance of watching film on Monday and knows that practice Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday is going to have him ready for Friday and help the game slow down for him.”

Oden expects his senior quarterback to be ready to lead Friday at 7 p.m. when the Bulldogs (7-3) face Warren De La Salle (7-3) in the district finals at Wayne State University.

“He’s embraced the challenge or having our backs against the wall where you play well and win, or you lose and go home,” Oden said. “He’s learned to embrace the pressure of ‘the game being on my shoulders.’ He wants the ball in his hands with the game on the line.”

The Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learner of the Week award is representative of the league’s top boys’ and girls’ athletes. The award is presented by the DPS Office of Athletics and is sponsored by Detroit-area McDonald’s owner-operators.
