Mumford High senior two-way standout DeShawn Foster had seven catches for 110 yards and 11 tackles and a fumble recovery in the Mustangs’ 13-8 victory last Friday against Cody and has been named Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learner of the Week.

Foster, a 6-1, 205-pound wide receiver-linebacker and captain, gave Coach Donshell English’s team the Fosterboost it needed to win the PSL consolation game at Ford Field, a victory that gave the Mustangs a 6-3 overall record and an automatic berth in the MHSAA Division 3 state playoffs.

“We weren’t having a good time moving the ball, but it was because of him when we were able,’’ English said. “He was our leader on offense. He was able to execute the game plan that allowed us to keep moving.”

Foster has a 3.3 grade point average and has received a couple of Division 2 offers to play college football, English said.

“He would say he’s strongest as a receiver, but his natural position is linebacker. We’ve had a very strong defense all year and he’s been the catalyst at middle linebacker. I think that’s where he’ll play in college.”

The Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learner of the Week award is representative of the league’s top boys’ and girls’ athletes. The award is presented by the DPS Office of Athletics and is sponsored by Detroit-area McDonald’s owner-operators.
