King High freshman Anquniece Wheeler took home four gold medals from the Detroit Public School League girls’ swimming championship meet Oct. 22 and has been named PSL Proud Strong Learner of the Week.

“If she stays focused the way she is this year, I think she’ll be one of the most outstanding swimmers to come out of the league in a long time,’’ King coach Gary Peterson said.

DSC_2948Wheeler’s big splash included victories in the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly. She also swam the butterfly on the winning 200 medley relay and the third leg of the 400 freestyle relay, helping King take six of the 11 events to finish a strong second place behind league champion Cass Tech.

“She can swim all four strokes, but the butterfly is probably her best,’’ Peterson said. “She’s only 1.5 seconds off qualifying for the state in the 100 butterfly. She’s going to be competing in a time trials Nov. 11 and hopefully she’ll be able to do something to qualify for the state meet.”

Wheeler, who has a 3.8 grade point average, is succeeding despite a hearing impairment.

“In most of her races, she’s just going on the reaction of everybody else,’’ Peterson said.  “A lot of times she can’t hear what’s being said.

“Not only is she a good athlete, but she’s an outstanding student. She participates in camps and acts as a counselor. She’s committed to doing things to help other kids who have a hearing impairment.

“We’ve had some good girl swimmers in the past. But when you get someone like that and she stays focused, Anquniece has a real good opportunity to do some great things here the next three years.”

The Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learner of the Week award is representative of the league’s top boys’ and girls’ athletes. The award is presented by the DPS Office of Athletics and is sponsored by Detroit-area McDonald’s owner-operators.
