Michigan Governor Rick Snyder visited Marcus Garvey Academy on Friday, October 24, to help students shop for winter must-haves during Operation School Bell. Over 750 Detroit Public Schools’ students in grades K-5 received new clothing, coats, hygiene items, school supplies, backpacks, shoe vouchers and more.
According to the DPS Office of School Social Work Service, Operation School Bell is a free event organized by the DPS Homeless Unit, in collaboration with the Assistance League of Southeastern Michigan. For several years the Michigan Association of School Social Workers, the Detroit School Social Workers Association and the Assistance League have distributed free clothes, supplies and food to students in need. Over 2,000 students have been served in the past 10 years.
