Western’s boys, Pershing’s girls win first PSL cross country meet of 2014

Western International High senior Juan Flores and Pershing High junior Jaishala Seal won the boys’ and girls’ 5,000-meter races, respectively, to lead their teams to victory Tuesday in the 2014 Detroit Public School League season-opening cross country meet at scenic Belle Isle.

Flores, the two-time defending PSL boys’ champion, crossed the finish line in 18:29 to outpace his brother, Western sophomore Yeray Flores (19:22), by nearly a minute.

King’s Christian Stokes placed third (20:10) followed by Western junior Jamari McCrory fourth (20:43) and East English Village’s Karmari Newman fifth (20:47).

Western’s team total of 43 included senior Jose Monge 14th (21:29) and junior Brailen Neely 22nd. The  top five boys’ teams were rounded out by Pershing in second with 70 followed by East English Village 112, King 117 and Renaissance 148.

Seal gutted out the final yards of the girls’ race to finish first in 23:28, just ahead of Pershing junior teammate Brittany Hill (23:29). Northwestern’s Tameisha Patton (23:30.577) placed third, a half step ahead of Pershing junior Renita Williams (23:30.902). Renaissance’s Clarissa Barksdale was fifth (24.26).

Pershing’s winning score of 36 included junior Saladina Woodson 13th (26.28) and junior Jasmine Hayes 16th. Renaissance’s girls took second with 53 followed by Northwestern 86, Western 123 and King 126.
