Cody junior running back Jayvonte Ball named PSL Proud Strong Learner of the Week

Cody High junior Jayvonte Ball, who had 10 carries for 206 yards including touchdown runs of 73 and 20 yards in a 44-0 victory last Friday against CMA, has been named the Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learner of the Week.

DSC_0028“He’s a great kid, very humble, and he wants to be one of the best running backs in the state,’’ Cody coach Calvin Norman said. “He wants to be up there with (Cass Tech’s) Mike Weber and other guys in that class. He knows those players and he looks up to those kind of players.”

Ball, a 5-9, 175-pound speedster, ran the ball 12 times for 106 yards in the Comets’ season-opening nonleague game against Warren Mott in the Prep Kickoff Classic at Wayne State University. Although his team lost 31-16, Ball received an award as Cody’s most outstanding player.

Against CMA, he had little trouble adding to his yardage total.

“We’ve got that big line up front and they were moving people out of the way,’’ Norman said. “The line gave him some running lanes and once he got to them, he was off to the races.”

Ball was brought up from the junior varsity as a freshman and impressed the Comets’ coaching staff in the last three games. Last year, he rushed for 938 yards as a sophomore to signal his arrival as a bona fide impact player. Norman expects him to continue to flourish in college.

“He works hard in the weight room and he comes to practice every day trying to make himself better,’’ the coach said. “He’s got another year of high school, but there’s no question that he’s a next-level player. He just needs to keep working.”

The Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learner of the Week award is representative of the league’s top boys’ and girls’ athletes. The award is presented by the DPS Office of Athletics and is sponsored by Detroit-area McDonald’s owner-operators
