Representatives from the University of Michigan will be onsite to share details of new enrichment programs offered to DPS students
Detroit Public Schools will host a NEW High School Recruitment Fair on Thursday, August 14 from 4-6 p.m. at the University of Michigan-Detroit Center, 3663 Woodward Ave. Prospective students who have not selected a high school are invited to attend the event.
Programs offered include those in Medicine and Science, Aerospace, Design and Alternative Energy, Dual Immersion Bilingual, Communication Arts, Technology, Agriscience, Public Leadership, Fine Arts and others. Included are the state’s only two public single-gender schools.
All high schools now accepting enrollment for available seats starting in the Fall 2014 will be featured. Also attending will be presenters from the University of Michigan on new enrichment programs offered to DPS students, career track recommendations, Safe Routes to and from school, interscholastic athletics, career/technical centers, and college scholarship information including details on how DPS graduates were able to earn more than $137 million in scholarships and grants for the 2013-2014 school year.
Details on the new Academy of the Americas 9th grade extension program – where all new enrolling 9th graders will receive a $500 scholarship – will also be available at the fair.
The new 9th grade program for the Academy of the Americas will offer a dual language curriculum, honors classes, and rigorous academic standards at a new site, which will be called the Escuela Preparatoria Academia de las Americas. It is part of an overall rollout of several major educational initiatives in Southwest Detroit, including a new gifted and talented program, a new adult education site, and much more.
The High School Recruitment Fair is being held in conjunction with Detroit Public Schools’ new “See It Believe It” Retain/Gain Enrollment Campaign launched July 31 to ensure the district retains all current students and gains new enrollees. The new “See It Believe It” branding seeks to demonstrate the school system’s commitment to providing academic programs, initiatives and partnerships – such as with the University of Michigan – that families desire, and making strategic decisions to attract and retain families. With DPS’ “See It Believe It” Retain/Gain Enrollment Campaign, college-readiness programs are a major component.
Students who attend the High School Recruitment Fair will also enjoy special giveaways. To RSVP for this event, please call (313) 873-6345 or email firstname.lastname@example.org. For more details, visit detroitk12.org/enroll.
