About 120 Title-1 eligible DPS students ages 7-12 years spend one full week (Sunday – Friday) at the camp site where they will enjoy a variety of outdoor activities including swimming, arts and crafts, fishing and more! Additionally, students will also engage in academic enrichment programs including Math, Science and Reading.
The camp’s kitchen staff prepares and serves three nutritious meals per day and a snack each evening. To ensure that each student maintains a safe, healthy and enjoyable camp experience, full time health care staff is on site along with a full range of other staff including camp counselors, cooks and maintenance staff.
“We’re excited for our children to experience the many activities that camping opportunities offer,” said Betti Wiggins, executive director of the DPS Office of School Nutrition. “From the fun to the newfound friendships, many former campers have shared what a difference camping made in their lives.”
Federal Title 1 funds cover the entire cost of the program, and thanks to the generous donations from the DPS Office of School Nutrition, the Detroit Public Schools Foundation and DPS employees, every Camp Burt Shurly camper will be provided with the following supplies at no cost upon arrival at the site:
- Bottom/top sheet
- Pillow/pillow case
- Thermal blanket
- Bath towel/wash cloth
- Shower shoes
- Toothpaste/toothbrush, Soap/Soap dish and other supplies
Applications are available at all DPS elementary and middle schools, parent resource centers and the DPS Department of Academics, 9th Floor Fisher Building.
