Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., Detroit Alumnae Chapter, selected the DPS Adult Education Center West Campus as the recipient of its 75th Anniversary Community Service Project on Tuesday, May 13. The library dedicated 75 new books, each one representing a year that the Detroit Alumnae Chapter has been providing community service.
The committee, headed by Dr. Beverly Gray, a retired Detroit Public Schools principal, decided to adopt a DPS school and provide it with a library. Their preference was to honor a school that had one of its members at the helm and Ms. Dedria Willis fit the bill as principal of the DPS Adult Education Center-West Campus. The teacher who started the school library with personal donations, Mrs. Judi Dent, is also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
According to Principal Willis, because the school services adult education, there is no funding for a library or librarian. The staff rotates working in the library daily. Some students stay after school between 2:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. to read a book or do homework.
