Renaissance, Central win PSL girls’ softball championships

Sophomore Kabria Arnold struck out seven in pitching a complete-game, two-hit shutout, junior Brittney Gordy made a great run-saving play in right field and senior Essence England had an RBI as Renaissance (20-5 overall, 10-0 league) defeated Cass Tech 3-0 Friday at University of Detroit Mercy to win the 2014 Detroit Public School League Division 1 girls’ softball championship, the Lady Phoenix’s 10th consecutive league crown. Cass Tech is 8-2 in the league and 12-9-1 overall.

Central Lady Trailblazers 2014 PSL Division 2 girls’ softball champions

“It was a great game,” Lady Phoenix coach Garrard Taylor said. “Cass played an excellent game. They brought the best out of us for us to win it.”

In Division 2, Central held on to defeat CMA 15-13 in three innings. Junior Jade Morris made a clutch catch in center field in the final inning to protect Central’s lead. Junior Chanelle Vandermier had two hits and scored three runs and sophomore Breanna McNeece and senior Amber Peterson scored three runs each for Coach Eric Peeples’ Lady Trailblazers (8-2). CMA is 7-3.
