National Tutoring Association honors DPS principals at annual conference

East English Village Preparatory Academy Principal Patricia Murray and J.E. Clark Preparatory Academy Principal Demond Thomas accepted the National Tutoring Program of the Year Public award at the 21st Annual NTA Conference on Monday, April 7.

Beginning in the 2011-12 school year, Lear Corporation and Detroit Public Schools teamed up for a comprehensive three-year Student Tutoring Program to strengthen educational pathways and lifelong learning. One hundred East English Village Preparatory Academy high school students traveled for four days each week to neighboring J. E. Clark Preparatory Academy under an innovative paid tutoring program aimed at raising student achievement and supporting successful transitions to high school.

The three-year, $1.5 million project, jointly developed by the schools’ principals, district academic leadership, Lear Corporation and partners, is funded by Lear Corporation. The program annually involves several hundred children on both sides of the tutoring equation.

This year’s NTA conference, Tutors: Searching the Shore for Starfish, was held at the Grand Hyatt Resort in Tampa, Florida April 5-9, 2014. Lear Corporation sponsored the trip for both principals, as well as other Lear, EEVPA and Clark tutoring program members.
