IKEA design team helps to create new “Ben Carson Reading Room” for Benjamin Carson High School students

Thanks to design and labor support from IKEA of Canton, Dr. Benjamin Carson High School of Science and Medicine (BCHS) celebrated the opening of the new Ben Carson Reading Room on Wednesday, February 26 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.  The BCHS Reading Room is the 101st reading room established across the country by the Carson Scholars Fund (CSF).

The Carson Scholars Fund is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) public charity founded in 1994 by world-renowned pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Benjamin Carson and his wife, Candy.  The organization is dedicated to combating illiteracy and promoting leisurely reading as a key to unlocking a child’s full potential.

Ben Carson High School is now among the established Reading Rooms in 14 states and Washington, D.C., decorated with attractive, eye-catching artwork based on Dr. Carson’s “THINK BIG” philosophy, which promotes outstanding academic achievement and dedication to helping others.

“Congratulations to the students and staff of Ben Carson. Enjoy your wonderful new Reading Room,” said Karen Ridgeway, Superintendent of Academics for Detroit Public Schools during the ribbon cutting ceremony. “A heartfelt thank you is extended to the Carson Scholars Fund, the Ben Carson Reading Project and IKEA of Canton for their strong support of our students. I know that our students will take full advantage of the benefits that this room will offer to help advance their bright futures here at Dr. Benjamin Carson High School of Science and Medicine and beyond.”

According to the Ben Carson Reading Project, last year students logged over 15 million minutes of independent reading in Ben Carson Reading Rooms. To learn more about the Carson Scholars Fund, visit www.carsonscholars.org.
