Cass Tech won six of 11 events and totaled 154 points to win the 2014 Detroit Public School League boys’ swimming championship Wednesday at East English Village Prep Academy.
Coach Eugene Collins’ Technicians were led by senior Jose Cardiel, who placed first in the 100 butterfly and the 200 freestyle and swam on the winning 200 medley, 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relay teams. The Technicians’ junior Angel Delatorre also placed first in the 100 backstroke.
King senior Obafemi Kheperu was a double gold medalist in the 500 freestyle and 200 individual medley. CMA senior Jason McCoy was a double gold medalist in the 50 and 100 freestyle. Renaissance senior Markis McCoy won the 100 breaststroke.
In the team scoring, Western finished second with 116 points followed by King third with 100, East English Village fourth with 30, CMA fifth with 27, Mumford sixth with 19, Renaissance seventh with 16, DCP-Northwestern eighth with 1 and Cody ninth with 0.
