Four PSL teams vying to advance past MHSAA football district finals

The Detroit Public School League is positioned to advance possibly three teams this weekend in the district finals of the 2013 Michigan High School Athletic Association football playoffs.

In a battle of 10-0 teams, Cass Tech, the two-time defending Division 1 state champion, will host Warren Mott for the district championship Saturday at 1 p.m.

Coach Thomas Wilcher’s Technicians, fresh off their 20-14 victory against King in the PSL championship game at Ford Field, shut out visiting Grosse Pointe South 35-0 last Saturday in a pre-district opener.

In Division 2, East English Village (7-3) went on the road to beat Grosse Pointe North 41-7 in the pre-district. The victory by Coach Rod Oden’s Bulldogs set up a rematch against PSL runner-up King (8-1). Coach Dale Harvel’s Crusaders advanced with a 32-6 victory against visiting PSL opponent Cody (6-4).

The Bulldogs and Crusaders opened the PSL season at East English Village and King won in double overtime 6-0. Friday’s 5 p.m. district championship at King High School is expected to be another gritty game.

In Division 3, rising PSL power Mumford (8-2) travels to St. Clair (9-1) for a 7 p.m. Friday district final. Coach Donshell English’s Mustangs opened the playoffs with a 20-8 victory against visiting PSL foe Denby (7-3). This weekend’s winners will advance to next weekend’s regional finals.

The PSL began the playoffs with seven qualifying teams. Renaissance lost 48-18 to Oak Park to finish the season 6-4.
