DPS students learn skills through chess

Chrysler Elementary School third-grader Mya Wideman competes against a 1984 Grandmaster Sergey Kudrin in a simultaneous match with 40 other students from across the city. The Detroit City Chess Club members are learning to concentrate, think and build up competitive skills as the Detroit Institute of Art’s patrons watch during a four-hour-long competition. Sharpening these skills has allowed some members to win national, regional and state competitions.
