DPS Goes PINK in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and schools across the district are going PINK! Several schools are getting involved by hosting events to not only make breast cancer awareness an educational forum for students, but also to put on display the urgency in making the community aware of the need for early detection, self-examination and annual mammograms.

DPS Goes PINK School Events:

Martin Luther King, Jr. Senior High School, 3200 E. Lafayette St., Detroit

10:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 22, 2013-Breast Cancer Information Rally

The King DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) Chapter will host a Breast Cancer Rally that will feature cancer survivors, a representative from Karmanos Cancer Institute and performances from the MLK Dance Group, Choir and Band.

Detroit International Academy for Young Women, 9026 Woodward Ave., Detroit

9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 23, 2013-DIA Hat Strut

DIA, the only PreK-12 all-girls public high school in the state of Michigan, will host its 5th Annual Shades of Pink “Hat Strut for Breast Cancer Awareness.” DPS Emergency Manager Jack Martin is expected to arrive at 10:15 a.m. to participate in the Hat Strut.

Thursday, October 24, 2013- P3A goes Pink with a Purpose

The entire P3A family will wear pink attire to support the fight against breast cancer. P3A eighth grade students will share breast cancer facts over the PA system. Donations will be collected throughout the day and all proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society.

Gompers Elementary-Middle School, 14450 Burt Rd., Detroit

1:50 p.m., Friday, October 25, 2013-PINK Day

Gompers will host an assembly where students will take part in an all-school pink costume photo contest. Students will be awarded for the best pink costume.

J.E. Clark Preparatory Academy, 15755 Bremen St., Detroit

1:30 p.m., Friday, October 25, 2013-Breast Cancer Awareness Walk

Clark Student Council members and Principal Demond Thomas will host its 1st Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk. The event is also being held in conjunction with the school’s Social Studies curriculum.

Durfee Elementary-Middle School, 2470 Collingwood St., Detroit

Friday, October 25, 2013  All-Day Breast Cancer Awareness Fundraiser
Saturday, October 26, 2013 – Pink Day Basketball Game

Durfee students will be dressed in pink attire and collecting $1 donations in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month on Friday October 25. All proceeds will go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The school’s goal is to raise $500 to give a big PINK check! On Saturday, October 26, 2013, the Lady Bulldogs will host a “Pink Day” Basketball Game at DCP @ Northwestern High School at 2:00 p.m. The cost is $3 per person.

Detroit Collegiate Preparatory High School at Northwestern, 2200 W. Grand Blvd., Detroit

1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 29, 2013-Breast Cancer Awareness Walk

DCP @ Northwestern’s R.E.A.L. (Respectful, Educated, Assertive, Leaders) Ladies First Mentoring and Leadership Group will host a Breast Cancer Awareness Walk on the school’s track.

Ludington Magnet Middle School, 19501 Berg Rd., Detroit

1:30 p.m., Tuesday, October 29, 2013-Breast Cancer Awareness Parade/Rally

Ludington students will create a human Breast Cancer Awareness Ribbon on the front lawn of the school. The entire school will wear pink shirts and parents will give donations to support breast cancer awareness.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Senior High School, 3200 E. Lafayette St., Detroit

10:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 30, 2013- Breast Cancer Community Walk

Students will participate in a Breast Cancer Community Walk around the King community to demonstrate their support of breast cancer awareness. Pink balloons will be released in honor of women who have lost their lives to breast cancer.

Jerry L. White Center High School, 14804 W. McNichols, Detroit

1:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 30, 2013- 1st Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Balloon Launch

In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the staff and students at Jerry L. White will release pink balloons in honor of Breast Cancer survivors and families. The event will take place on the football field.

Schools including Chrysler Elementary and Carver S.T.E.M. Academy also hosted events in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
