Edgar O. Durfee, who served as Probate Judge for 50 years in Detroit, would have been proud of his namesake as 640 Durfee Elementary-Middle School students attended Count Day on October 2.
Each student was given a raffle ticket as they entered the building for a chance to win “Dollar Tree” candy at the end of the day. There was also locker decorating, compliments of Durfee’s enthusiastic 1st, 4th and 5th graders, opportunities to win gift cards and a delicious meal including barbeque chicken, macaroni and cheese, muffins and cobbler.
Durfee students were most excited most about the famous “Exotic Zoo!” With permission slips in one hand and cameras in the other, kids screamed with excitement and received the ultimate science lesson in animal behavior. Each took part in a petting frenzy of a 15-foot python snake, 100-pound tortoise and large iguana.
Students yelled with anticipation and at times fear, as the arctic fox, armadillo and lizard with a 10-inch tongue stared at them. For Durfee students, this is a day they will never forget!
