DCP-Northwestern in position to flip the anticipated PSL football script

If the Detroit Public School League football semifinals were played today, Cass Tech and Mumford would qualify from the West and King and East English Village would be the teams from the East.

That scenario most likely will be the case when the dust settles, but Detroit Collegiate Prep at Northwestern can shake up those expectations when it visits unbeaten Mumford in a key battle between PSL West contenders.

Coach Jimmy Hill’s Colts have fashioned a 4-1 overall and 3-1 league record entering Friday’s 4 p.m. contest, while Coach Donshell English’s Mustangs are 5-0 overall and tied at 4-0 with unbeaten Cass Tech for the West Division lead.

DCP-Northwestern’s only loss was a 60-0 thrashing by Cass Tech in the league opener. That was in week 2. The Colts can only hope to fare better against a top contender in week 6.

In other games Friday, all 4 p.m. starts, defending league champion King (5-0, 4-0 PSL East) puts its unbeaten record on the line against Douglass (1-3 overall, 1-2 PSL East) at East English Village Prep; Pershing (1-4 overall, 1-2 PSL East) is at Denby (4-1, 2-1 PSL East); defending back-to-back division 1 state champion Cass Tech (5-0, 4-0 PSL West) is at winless Ford (0-5, 0-4 PSL West); Western (2-3, 1-3 PSL West) plays Cody (2-3, 2-2 PSL West) at DCP-Northwestern High; winless Central (0-5, 0-4 PSL West) is at Renaissance (2-3, 2-2 PSL West); and Osborn (2-3, 2-2 PSL East) visits winless Southeastern (0-5, 0-4 PSL East). East English Village (3-2, 3-1 PSL East) visits Wyoming (near Grand Rapids) in a 5 p.m. nonleague game.

In last Friday’s action, Mumford squashed Ford 50-0; Cass Tech engulfed Central 76-0; Denby shut out Osborn 60-0; DCP-Northwestern beat Western 36-6; East English Village routed Southeastern 41-6; Cody beat Renaissance 16-0; and Douglass defeated Pershing 18-6.
