Cass Tech, the back-to-back Division 1 defending state champions, will open the 2013 high school football season against highly-touted Southfield Friday at 7 p.m. in a marquee matchup of the Detroit Sports Commission’s Prep Kickoff Classic at Wayne State University’s Adams Field.
Coach Thomas Wilcher’s Technicians are ranked No. 1 in the state by the Detroit News and boast several Division 1 college prospects that will keep the focus on the Detroit Public School League’s wealth of gridiron talent.
All 15 PSL football teams will open the season this weekend, beginning with four games Thursday featuring DCP-Northwestern against visiting Highland Park at 7 p.m., Renaissance at Farmington Hills Harrison at 6 p.m., Pershing at Romulus at 7 p.m., and Central on the road against Steubenville (Ohio) at 6 p.m.
Friday’s nonleague action includes seven games involving PSL teams. In addition to Cass Tech-Southfield, East English Village will play Detroit Loyola in the 1 p.m. game of the Prep Kickoff Classic at Wayne State. Other Friday openers include the defending PSL champion King Crusaders hosting Port Huron at 7 p.m., Douglass at Harper Woods Chandler Park at 7 p.m., Denby at Ford at 5:30 p.m., Southeastern at Monroe at 7 p.m., and Cody at Detroit Catholic Central at 7 p.m.
In Saturday openers, both at Mumford High, Western plays Osborn at 2 p.m., and Garden City plays the host Mustangs at 7:30 p.m.
The PSL opens its league schedule with seven games next Friday, Sept. 6, including East English Village against King in a 7 p.m. rematch of last year’s league championship game.
