2013 African Diaspora Youth Conference Student Reflections

Students from Cass and Renaissance enjoyed their overall experience at this year’s 2013 African Diaspora Youth Conference.

Dominique Caldwell and Kyla Wright, two of the ADYC participants, presented a power point narrative of their experience at the conference this year. Their highlights included:

  • A better understanding of the diaspora and its meaning
  • Interactions with students from different cultures throughout Ontario Canada
  • Tearing down stereotypes
  • Comparing Canadian and U.S. vocabulary for things like bathroom vs. washroom or angry vs. cheesed
  • Recognizing Canadian youth from various cultures have same values, beliefs and issues
  • Keynote speaker Gail Perry Mason (Writer, Financial Coach, and Speaker)
  • Dance troupe from Detroit
  • Group skits and presentations
  • UM Dearborn workshops and breakout sessions
  • New friendships now maintained through social media
