Academic Games Leagues of America National Tournament 2013 DPS Team Tournament Results
On April 24, 2013, the top Academic Games players from Detroit Public Schools traveled to Charlotte, NC where the students competed in the Academic Games League of America’s National Tournament. The following schools were represented: Bates Academy, Brewer, Cass Tech, MacKenzie and Vernor.
Sixty-five DPS students in grades 5 through 12 competed against over 800 students from across the country with winners in EVERY category! There are seven different games that make up the cadre of Academic Games (AG). Although the most popular games have a mathematics and logic basis, there are also games that are focused on social studies and language arts.
The following schools returned with Division Titles: Bates Academy, Brewer, Cass Tech and Vernor. Cass Tech also garnered a National Team Winner title!
There were three Individual Winners at the National level, with the highest honor belonging to Cass Tech’s Luis Gonzalez, a junior who is the National Equations Champion. Luis has the distinction of being the highest ranking high school student in the NATION! Hannah Garlington (8th grade, Bates Academy) and Marie Phillips (6th grade, Vernor Elementary) both had perfect scores in the game of Equations! Bravo to all of our DPS Academic Games winners! In addition, Mr. Maurice El-Amin, Cass Tech’s long-time and dedicated AG coach was presented the 2013 National Outstanding Coach of the Year award.
