On April 3, 2013, nearly 200 DPS students, coaches and chaperones headed to Nashville, TN for the U S Chess Federation’s National Tournament – the 2013 SuperNationals. This event occurs every 4 years where all 3 national tournaments (Elementary, Middle and High school) are combined into one gigantic tournament, always held at Opryland. Our students competed against thousands of chess players from across the country in grades K-12. The 3-day tournament ended with students from nine DPS schools returning to Detroit holding National titles! The following schools are home to our national winners: Bates Academy, Chrysler, Detroit International Academy, Fisher Upper, FLICS, Spain, Cass Tech, ML King and Renaissance!
Our students competed and won in twelve of the twenty sections and returned to Detroit with many trophies that are proudly displayed in the school’s offices. In addition to the team’s accomplishments, there were also many individual national winners. Thunderous CONGRATULATIONS to all of our DPS National Chess Champions!!
