A total of 60 seventh- and eighth-grade students from Amelia Earhart Elementary-Middle School (20 teams) were selected to travel to Lansing to compete in the regional MDOT Bridge Building Challenge on April 16, 2013.
Each team created a bridge using the Bentley engineering software and submitted a portfolio in order to be accepted. Students were treated to an all-expense paid overnight stay at the Lansing Raddison Hotel.
In the morning, they competed in the Bridge Challenge. The students created and gave PowerPoint presentations about their bridge building experience, then went to the testing area where they added weight to their bridge to find out how much their bridge could hold. From that, the strength to weight ratio was calculated.
Judges tallied the scores from the bridges strength to weight ratio and the PowerPoint presentation to determine the winners.
Two Earhart teams placed in the competition:
- “The Avengers” came in 1st place. This team consisted of Tatiana Alvarez, Annalisa Barragan, and Ladi Rodriguez.
- “The Buttercups” came in 4th place. The team consisted of Tatiana West, Brianna Duty, and Chadsadey Collier.
This was Earhart’s first year in the competition.
