Annual Ethnic Luncheon at Clippert Academy

Clippert Academy hosted its annual Ethnic Luncheon on March 6, where parents and visitors had the opportunity to indulge in a helping of culture from an assortment of countries.

For 30 years, Clippert Academy has hosted an annual Ethnic Luncheon in celebration of the many cultures around the world. Clippert welcomes everyone from principals to students, parents and community members to come and take part in their tradition.

Students were asked to bring a dish while local businesses donated food and money toward the luncheon. Parents pitched in by aiding in food preparation as well as set-up and decorations. Guests and students enjoyed a spread of delicacies from around the world representing many cultures.

In addition to the food, each homeroom class at Clippert selected a country to represent nd decorated their homeroom door accordingly. The countries included:

  • India
  • Kenya
  • Greece
  • Egypt
  • Italy
  • Japan
  • Poland
  • Germany
  • Spain
  • Jamaica
  • Ireland
  • Mexico
  • England
  • Argentina
  • France
  • Nigeria
  • Portugal
  • Canada
  • Chile
  • Brazil

Students were encouraged to learn everything they could about the chosen country’s history, culture and language then showcase their knowledge and creativity in their decorations. Students went above and beyond by not only decorating their doors but their classrooms as well. Some students even dressed up according to their country’s attire.

“The students act as ambassadors for their chosen countries,” said Principal Kim Gonzalez.

When parents and guests came for the luncheon, it was the students’ responsibility to explain to visitors what the decorations represented and to educate them on the featured countries.

During mealtime, judges observed each door in order to select a winner. The judges were participants from Detroit Public Schools and community members who were invited to participate in the Ethnic Luncheon.
