Three Detroit Public School League boys’ district championship teams remain alive in the MHSAA state basketball tournament entering today’s (Monday, March 11) regional semifinals.
In Class A, Southeastern plays Warren Cousino, 5:30 p.m., at Grosse Pointe North High School, and unbeaten top-ranked Pershing plays Redford Thurston, 7 p.m., at Southfield High School.
In Class B, four-time consecutive district champion Douglass plays Ferndale, 7:30 p.m., at Birmingham Detroit Country Day High School.
On Tuesday, King High’s top-ranked unbeaten girls’ team plays Westland John Glenn, 6 p.m., in the MHSAA Class A quarterfinal game at Western International High School.
A capacity crowd at Western International High School saw one of the great high school games. Pershing shot 10-for-13 in the fourth quarter to erase Cass Tech’s double-digit lead and won on Martez Walker’s 15-foot baseline jumper at the buzzer.
In other district finals:
Douglass 57, Detroit Henry Ford Academy 24: Andre Frederick scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Douglass (16-6). Darrell Davis added 13 points.
Southeastern 65, St. Clair Shores Lakeview 33: Jovone Haynes scored 11 points and Leonard Harper-Baker and Carlos Taylor each added 10 points for Southeastern (17-5). Robert Shields scor…ed 10 points for Lakeview (19-4).
U-D Jesuit 69, Renaissance 56: AJ Horde scored 17 points for U-D Jesuit (18-4), and Cassius Winston added 15 points and 12 assists. Clark Bishop scored 17 points for Renaissance (10-12).
Davis Aerospace lost to Southfield Christian in Class D.
