Pershing completes perfect boys’ basketball regular season with Operation Friendship victory

In a storied boys’ basketball history that includes five state championships, Detroit Public School League champion Pershing High has never finished a season unbeaten.

Operation Friendship (489)First-year coach Wydell Henry’s No. 1-ranked Doughboys (20-0) have their eyes focused on a historic sixth state championship, and finishing unbeaten, after completing a perfect regular season Thursday with a 74-59 victory against University of Detroit Jesuit (16-4).

Pershing, led by Mr. PSL Kahlil Felder’s 22 points and Martez Walker’s 13, easily triumphed to capture the Operation Friendship city championship before a near-capacity crowd at Western International High School. The victory ended the Catholic League’s two-year winning streak in this event.

“A lot Public School League coaches don’t take this game seriously after that city championship game,” said Henry.  “They say it’s not a big game. But it’s definitely a big game for the city to show that the Public School League is still good.”

In the consolation game between the PSL and Catholic League runners-up, Cass Tech (16-3) lost 55-52 loss to Warren De La Salle (16-4).

Pershing will open the state tournament at home against King at 5 p.m. Monday. Cass Tech plays at 4 p.m. Monday at Cody (7-6).
