DPS students participate at Centennial Celebration

The Rosa Parks Scholarship Foundation held a Centennial Celebration to honor the birth and legacy of civil rights icon, Rosa Parks, Saturday, February 2, 2013.

Four Detroit Public Schools’ students were selected with the assistance of the DPS Office of Guidance and Counseling to read excerpts of her life. Fox 2 News Anchor Huel Perkins was the master of ceremonies. Entertainment was provided by the James Tatum Trio.

The students who participated were as follows:
Kristia Maxwell, 4th Grade Student, Marcus Garvey Academy, shared the Early Years of Rosa Parks;
Akeem Mucker, 5th Grade Student, Marcus Garvey Academy, spoke of Rosa Parks Activism with the NAACP;
Mikal Austin, 8th Grade Student, Ludington Middle School, described her challenges while riding the bus;
Lorin Wilkins, 12th Grade Student, Renaissance High School, discussed the Montgomery Bus Boycott and Rosa Parks Life in Detroit.
