King’s Da’Vaun Williams, Renaissance’s Lauren Turner honored with Dave Bing Scholarship Award

King High School quarterback Da”Vaun Williams, who is headed to Howard University in the fall, and Renaissance High volleyball standout Lauren Turner, who will atttend Bethune Cookman, were honored Monday night as the recipients of the Dave Bing Scholarship for Leadership and Achievement.

The $1,000 awards were presented on stage by Mayor Bing as part of the 57th Michigan Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony at Max Fisher Theater.

Former Pershing High, Michigan State, Olympic Gold Medalist and NBA star Steve Smith was among this year’s inductees along with Tony Dungy, Mateen Cleaves, Pamela McGee, Lomas Brown, Tyrone Wheatley, Mark Howe and Dick Kimball.

Players from Pershing High’s recently-crowned PSL city champions attended the ceremony and were acknowledged by the Doughboy great, Steve Smith, for whom Pershing’s gymnasium is named.
